Coles is recruiting and fast-tracking thousands of new team members to replenish stock on store shelves as the grocery company tackles the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on its workers and supply chain.
The new recruits are working in the stores and distribution centres to help current staff deal with the product shortages.
Kevin Gunn, Executive General Manager of Central Operations and Transformation, says the recruitment drive will help Coles recover from recent supply chain concerns.
“Ever part of the food supply chain has seen increased numbers of staff isolating, from farmers, food processors and the transport sector to our distribution centres and stores,” Kevin says. “The end result has been fewer products available for customers.”
Recruits are needed in online order fulfilment, stock replenishment, customer service, order delivery, distribution centre and forklift operations.
Coles has partnered with Jobs Victoria, an external employment service provider. It is helping the grocery company identify suitable candidates and fill thousands of vacant roles.
Con Hondrogiannis, an order picker and forklift driver registered with Jobs Victoria – which helped him get work at Coles during the pandemic – says he would recommend others who are looking for jobs to do the same.
“This has been the best job I’ve ever had in my life,” Con says. “The job is financially and physically rewarding and they provide good opportunities to grow.”
Additional shifts are available to eligible team members. These will potentially provide them with opportunities to earn more, and to develop new skills.
This will enable them to work in different roles so they can cover for their colleagues who might need to isolate.
“Our team members are working very hard but they need extra help,” Kevin says. “So we’re looking forward to welcoming thousands of new recruits to our stores and distribution centres to help us fill our shelves as quickly as possible.”
