Australia Post delivered 52 million parcels throughout December, with increases in delivery by air.
The company used 25 freighters every night to fly more than 8.7 million kgs of parcels in the month of December alone.
This was up 13 per cent from 2020. On the busiest December day, 556 tonnes of parcels were moved.
Increased delivery was in part facilitated by developments in the company’s parcel delivery capacity.
Paul Graham, Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, says that 52 million parcels being delivered at Christmas “demonstrates the dedication of the people in our Post Office” and that more than “5000 new team members” helped to make it possible.
He says many months were spent preparing for the festive season despite the ongoing challenges the pandemic presented, and the entire Australia Post team had delivered a great Christmas for Australians.
Australia Post’s app and website had more than 83 million visits. Almost five million estimated time of arrival alerts were sent to customers in December.
This comes as over 5.6 million Australian households shopped online. There was more online shopping in the months of October and November than in previous years.
“We thank Australians for their patience and support during these challenging times,” Paul says.
He adds Australia Post “saw a really big November for both deliveries and online shopping” in the lead-up to the traditional “December peak”.
Over 20 million customers visited Post Offices, including more than 3.9 million from PO Boxes.
More than 475,000 items were collected from the company’s free parcel lockers around Australia throughout December. This was the most ever in any month.
The top online Christmas purchases were books, which were up more than 22 per cent while specialty food was up more than five per cent, and pharmacy items were up more than nine per cent from the month of November.
