Pretty simple question - I need to design a secure enclosure and can't get any input form Ops about the size of opening they need for forking freight cages and aircans in and out.

What is a reasonable gap on either side of a wide-ish load for safe forklift access through a gateway? The managers are saying a 3 metre gap will be enough for 2.5 metre wide loads - and sure, you can pass through like that, but is it enough to ensure incidents don't occur? I have driven forklifts a lot and I guarantee that with 250mm (ten inches) clearance on either side, someone will catch the gatepost before long. People aren't robots.

Is there a standard or guide for routine access of this sort? Or just a common-sense minimum?
