I figured this might be a question for the logistics sub, but let's try it here first.

I'm a recent grad in supply chain management. Just started working in this job as a remote dispatcher last year for air import shipments nationwide. I didn't expect this job to be easy and have always heard that it's a finger pointing game. I take notes on every issue I come across and solve.

Lately, I've found myself chronically stressed or on edge with this job. It's just ongoing problems everyday.

  • ton of shipments to keep track of
  • lack of response (sometimes I'm following up 10 times with a trucker, airline, or vendor just to get a response)
  • nobody wants to be responsible for their mistakes
  • airlines don't do their jobs and we have tons of freight sitting at airline for weeks now
  • internal inhouse systems are all old school and the billing is all done manually which is time consuming from my work
  • technical issues out of my control
  • the airline and driver do not know where the freight half the time

The consequence to this are

  • storage costs
  • dry run fees from the driver
  • credit issues with the client
  • upset customer wondering why the freight isn't delivered on time
  • lack of trust from drivers due to dry runs
  • freight that sits at airline for months or picked up by the wrong driver
  • My time wasted micromanaging other people to do their job

While there are solutions and prevention measures in place for this, lately the problems just seem to recur and backlog.

Storage is a major issue to air freight and probably what drives me through the roof. I may have cost the company ~$50,000 in storage since I started either through my mistake or a cost that none of our vendors want to take responsibility for. Just as they've gaslighted me on blame, sadly gaslighting and rebilling these costs back is also something I've successfully learned to do on this job to cover my ass. The irresponsibility of all parties we work with has me fearing that one day the airlines will discover freight sitting on hand for months and then try to charge us a 6-figure of storage for it. And guess who's fault it will be?

I should mention that the economic conditions around the world has caused my process to change dramatically since I started this job. Imports surged at a record pace than what anybody's able to handle. Last fall, I was making phone calls with only airlines to check on freight availability of a shipment imported same day. Nowadays, I'm on emails, multiple calls, and even group chats with the airline, vendor, and trucker asking if a shipment has been located after 2 months or why we're being charged extra. We are double our Christmas peak. Every area of this industry is short staffed.

Regarding my coworkers, I'm always encouraged to ask for help/questions on the job. The few times I've asked for help on this job, usually my seniors are too busy. If I complain about the work, even if sarcastically, the response is "if you think that's hard, wait till you get promoted to doing my job." Communciation isn't always clear since we're all working from home. I should note that I'm the only dispatcher in our department. The other accounts in our department don't deal with as much logistics as I do.

Minus the rant. I actually love this job and challenges. I've learned a lot of important skills from problem solving to management and work ethic skills that may have improved my own personal life. And the manager is in the process of promoting me.

Though lately I've been reconsidering this promotion and going somewhere else. I've had several decent job offers and interviews already. But I fear that other jobs probably won't be as lenient to me working from home and perhaps probably face the same challenges I do with my job as well. I've also grown into this company and don't like the idea of starting over with another company.

Tl;dr - just started my career as a dispatcher for air imports, great job and benefits love what I do and what I'm learning, but the stress and problems only pile up. I'm expected to do more than what 8 hours of work can fit. Need some input what to do next.
