Hello there! I am looking to understand the cost of shipping solar equipment, specifically solar panels themselves, inverters and batteries. I am going off of publicly available info and have no experience in logistics. I am basically trying to understand how many units wind up being stuffed into a single container and how much it costs to ship said container, then divide the two and figure out the shipping costs per unit to see how badly it would impact pricing....

So for example take micro-inverters... They are 2x8x9'' without packaging, so adding 15% for packaging I am getting to 165 cu inches per thing. I also calculate that a 40 footer container measuring 40 x 8 x 8'6'' would accommodate ~4,700,000 cu inches, or about 28,300 units of this product. I have read that shipping a 40 footer from India to the US now costs up to $6,500 from $2000 in the "normal" past. That would mean $6,500 / 28,300 = $0.23 per unit.

Am I off-base here or do these numbers make sense to you? If I applied the same logic to solar panels and batteries would I get to a good estimate of unit costs?
