I've been debating with my team for a while on who's right and who's wrong. I'd appreciate your input on the matter.
I work as a salesman and logistics organiser for air freight shipments out of an EU airport. As we get a quote request, I send airline agents a request for price and get it back from them. Recently big logistics chains started to press down on prices, to keep their big clients and to run other freight forwarders out of business or on 0 profit. No big deal, that's just how it goes.
To combat that, we found out that shipping via the same carriers from other EU airports becomes cheaper, since our airport is rather small but in close proximity to other countries bigger airports and we can then actually compete with these big chains.
Now the few airline agents at our airport found this out and are now saying we're breaching the "exclusivity to offer rates for these carries in our country" and that that's not right.
As far as I'm aware the EU is a free market and there shouldn't be a problem with me booking cargo space on the same carrier and trucking it to a different country, just so I can get a better rate.
Example. Agent 1 from my airport gives me price for 3€/kg on UA carrier out of xxx airport
Agent 2 from another airport in another country gives me price for 2.50€/kg on UA carrier out of yyy airport
We book with agent 2 in another country, since with trucking it's still cheaper, and agent 1 says we're doing something wrong after finding out, being mad at us and giving us higher prices on other shipment quotations, making us even less competitive.
Tell me who's right here? The agent or us? Is what we do illegal? They sure tell us that it is but I'm no legal expert.
