Social media giants are trying to engage their users in new ways and offering e-commerce shopping options within the platforms has become a common approach in recent months.
Pinterest is the latest to expand its shopping offerings, announcing Shopping Lists. The service allows Pinners (Pinterest’s name for users) to save their product pins in a single location so they can quickly locate items they are interested in purchasing at a later date. In addition, Pinterest will monitor products on the pinned items and send alerts should prices change.
The service will be launched in the U.S. and U.K. initially and expand to Australia, Canada, France and Germany later this year.
“Pinners will also be able to get inspiration from Shopping spotlights, which showcase expert recommendations and trends from influential fashion and home tastemakers as well as publishers,” the company said in a blog post.
Pinterest has been trying to make it easier for users to engage with brands, launching a number of shopping options, including shop by search that promotes a shop tab when users search for items. Shopping with Lens allows users to take pictures of items they see in the real world and connects them with that product on Pinterest. Also, users can view shopping options based on pins, product spotlights and boards, where a dedicated shop section can be shown.
In the U.S., U.K. and Canada, Pinterest will also launch The Goods by Pinterest two-week shopping spotlight. During this period, users will receive access to limited edition products sold exclusively through Pinterest.
The company added that brands benefit as internal company research conducted by Dynata found Pinterest users that visited the platform weekly outspent non-Pinners by 2x each month and have basket sizes that are 85% larger.
“People have always come to Pinterest to shop — they use Pinterest to discover new ideas and actively consider what to do or buy to bring those ideas to life. We want to help users to find products just right for them and feel confident that they’ve made a solid choice from reputable merchants with a seamless shopping experience,” said Dan Lurie, global head of shopping products at Pinterest. “We’re excited that Pinterest users in more countries will now be able to go from inspiration to purchase anywhere on Pinterest, bringing us one step closer to our goal of making every Pin easy to shop.”
