Am I pigeonholing myself?

Hey guys. I'm wrapping up my masters in international logistics and am looking to really establish myself in the field. My area of academic focus and interest has largely been import and export compliance and I would really love to do that some day.

The thing is I have been working in the local maritime industry for the last half decade as a marine machinist/engineer and so when I have applied to brokerages or regional importers and exporters I got no bites because I had no experience (fair enough).

Well, now I seem to have done well at an interview and am now talking to a local construction subcontractor company for a junior logistics position. It would have me managing equipment and scheduling personnel and equipment, so its definitely a logistics role. While it doesn't have anything to do with imports or exports I still feel that its the right move as I can at least get my foot in the logistics industry and gain real experience, even if not the specialization/field that I would prefer.

To sum up, my question is would this position and the experience I gain from this position box me out of entering the international logistics field in the future or am I right in thinking that this is a great opportunity and better on a resume than marine engineer/machinist.

Am I pigeonholing myself?
