Hey all. I’m reaching out to the community here to seek industry advice, and gauge how feasible my aspirations are.

My background:

I work for a same-day messenger company in Chicago. I started as a courier almost a decade ago. After a few years on the streets, I was promoted to an operations management position where I was responsible for managing a team of 20+ couriers and office staff. When the pandemic started and our needs changed, I pivoted into a new role in Sales/Business Development.

My company is family owned/operated, and I am one of the only employees who is outside of their bubble. I am also one of the only younger employees (most of my coworkers are age 55+ are are stuck in the golden olden days of the messenger industry of the 80s and 90s). It may sound cliche, but it’s a very toxic environment and nepotism is rampant. Naturally, this is causing stagnation and a lack of innovation. I yearn for the opportunity to work in a more diverse environment in a growing industry. I know that I’m underpaid/overworked for the amount of responsibility I carry.

In an effort to manifest my goals, I’ve entered into an Associate Degree program for Supply Chain/Logistics Mgmt at my Community College. I will be completing my degree by the end of 2022. I’m hoping that by combining the degree along with my professional experience, I will be able to find a job at a different company with more opportunity, room for growth, and hopefully a less stressful environment (I know, I know - Logistics and SCM is intrinsically stressful!)

I’m interested in learning more about international shipping/global logistics, particularly between the USA and Latin America. Sustainable/green transportation is also something I would like to learn more about. Most of my experience deals with same-day shipping around the midwest and I feel like there is so much more for me to learn about the world of Logistics and SCM.

I enjoyed the hands-on nature of Operations, but I’ve read that there is more opportunity and room for growth within Sales. Is this generally true?

What types of jobs exist for people with my experience?

Does anyone ever have the opportunity to travel for their jobs?

Is it better to seek a logistics job at a non-logistics company?
